Summary
This module provides a comprehensive coverage of pharmacy-relevant topics relating to renal and endocrine diseases. Students will understand how key biological systems can malfunction in disease and how these conditions can be treated by specific drug therapies. On completion of the module students will know about the symptoms and management of renal and endocrine diseases and will have a sound knowledge of the underlying biology, pharmacology and chemistry, including the design of dosing devices and ethical considerations for organ transplants.
This course (module) considers:
• The biology of renal and endocrine function.
• The symptoms of renal and endocrine diseases.
• The chemistry and mechanism of action of peptide-based drugs (insulin as key example);
• Renal pharmacokinetics.
• Physical and chemical properties of proteins relevant to formulation and manufacture of insulin products.
• Recombinant DNA technology.
• Presentation and management of symptoms relating to diabetes and renal disease.
• Ethics relating to renal and endocrine topics
Assessment
- 30% Lab reports
- 70% Written exam (2-hour)
Learning Outcomes
MLO 1: Demonstrate a thorough understanding of the structure and function of the endocrine and renal systems, the mechanism by which endocrine and renal disorders may develop, and the clinical management of these conditions, with diabetes mellitus and kidney failure as key focuses. (C3-Applying)
MLO2: Organise principles of experimental design and methodology, particularly in relations to protein and peptide formulations and insulins in a laboratory setting. (P5-Complex Overt Responses)
MLO3: Identify the key roles that pharmacists play in the management of medicines in simulated scenarios of acute and chronic endocrine and renal diseases. (C4-Analysing)
MLO4: Examine library and electronic resources for information to dispense renal and endocrine drugs. (C4-Analysing)
