Summary

This is the first of the Drug, Medicine and Patient (DMP) modules, where the approach is to concentrate on a given disease as the central theme of the module. This module looks at dyspepsia and associated diseases of the upper gastrointestinal (GI) tract.  The emphasis of the DMP modules, as the name suggests, is the drug, medicine and patient. To achieve this, the science and practice teaching is integrated across all pharmacy subject areas (as described in the vertical themes below), where the central focus of teaching is the drug molecule, medicine and patient. Case study problem-based learning forms part of this module, where the emphasis is on students becoming self-seeking independent learners, with high level enquiry and critical skills.
This module considers:
•    The range of drugs and medicines available to treat dyspepsia and associated conditions. The main emphasis is on antacids, H2-receptor antagonists and proton pump inhibitors, with a number of other classes of drugs also introduced.
•    The patient with dyspepsia and/or other associated conditions, and the pharmacist’s interaction with them; over-the-counter and prescribed medicines for the treatment of dyspepsia, together with the clinical practice associated with these medicines.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                    •    The anatomy and physiology of the healthy stomach and upper GI tract, together with the diseases and symptoms of dyspepsia and associated conditions.
•    The underlying science of the drugs and medicines, which allows an understanding of their therapeutic activities and usage. Examples here include the biology, pharmacology and chemistry of their mechanism of action and the chemistry and pharmaceutics of their formulation. Emphasis in the science teaching is placed on understanding and prediction, with the importance of evidence in science being stressed.
•    The development of study and learning skills appropriate for students of pharmacy in higher education, including independent learning and critical skills.

Assessment

Learning Outcomes

ML01: Recognise how the science of pharmacy is applied in the design and development of medicines and devices, and laws and ethics concerning the sale and supply of medicines.(C2-Understanding)
MLO2: Perform laboratory work related to manufacture of antacid medicine and chemistry of drugs and medicines used in the treatment of dyspepsia (P4-Mechanism)
MLO3: Determine appropriate interventions and counselling points, based on ethical decision making for a given patient scenario. (C4-Anlaysing)
MLO4: Identify the correct diagnostic tests, illnesses and treatment related to dyspepsia. (C4-Analysing)
MLO5: Integrate pharmaceutical principles to the formulation, preparation and packaging of products. (C5-Evaluating)
