Learning Outcomes

Critically analyse, synthesise and evaluate the efficacy, implementation and ethics of mental health nursing interventions, legislation, and care provision.

Critically consider and analyse the therapeutic use of self in the development of recovery focussed relationships. This will include developing knowledge of facilitating others to develop self-awareness, making and justifying decisions relating to risk, avoiding risk aversion and demonstrating ability to promote safety through critically evaluating the evidence bases for mental health nursing.

Critically evaluate how mental health nurses are able to lead, manage and co-ordinate the delivery of care which is underpinned by the application of knowledge of psychological, sociological and physiological theories of mental health problems.

Differentiate between different communication strategies to effectively engage with patients, service users, carers, and the multidisciplinary team, to negotiate and advocate clients to support the delivery of complex care pathways and packages of care to meet individual needs.

Develop the political awareness needed to influence mental health policy, practice and legislation, summarising and synthesising different perspectives on mental health nursing practice.

Develop knowledge and awareness, as well as the practical application, of the need to challenge discrimination faced by people who experience mental health problems.
