Summary
This course allows for exploration of the following ideas:
- Mental health nurses’ role in the comprehensive assessment and care planning of individuals with mental health difficulties, including the identification and support needs of at risk and vulnerable individuals.
- Mental health nurses collaborative role in the promotion of mental health and well-being alongside other professionals, to support recovery and social inclusion.
- The importance of supporting equality, valuing diversity and respecting the rights of patients, clients and carers.
- An in depth discussion of the various models of understanding mental health.
- The structure of mental health services and how this impacts upon the role of contemporary mental health nursing.
- The development of values that underpin a recovery based approach to practice, including working with a person to promote positive risk taking.

Educational Aims
This course aims to provide students with the opportunity to critically explore the skills, values and evidence base essential for supporting individuals towards their recovery when they are experiencing mental health problems.Learning Outcomes
Critically consider and analyse the therapeutic use of self in the development of recovery focussed relationships, including developing knowledge of facilitating others to develop self-awareness, making and justifying decisions relating to risk, avoiding risk aversion and demonstrating ability to promote safety through critically evaluating advances in evidence bases for mental health.
Lead, manage and co-ordinate the delivery of person centred recovery orientated mental health care underpinned by the application of knowledge of psychological, sociological and physiological theories of the cause and consequences of mental health problems.
Differentiate between different communication strategies to effectively engage with service users, carers, and the multidisciplinary team, to negotiate and advocate on behalf of mental health clients to support the delivery of complex care pathways and packages of care to meet individual needs.
Develop the political awareness needed to influence mental health policy, practice and legislation, summarising and synthesising different perspectives on mental health nursing practice.
Develop knowledge and awareness, as well as the practical application, of the need to challenge discrimination faced by people who experience mental health problems.
