Summary

This course considers:

                                    o Total patient care, management and prioritisation. 
                                    o A-E assessment and management of clinical deterioration using simulated patients. 
                                    o Importance of timely interventions, understanding of altered pathophysiology in ill 
                                       health and ability to relate these issues to different disease processes. 
                                    o Basic blood results, blood transfusion, chest X-rays interpretation, chest auscultation, 
                                       ECGs, venepuncture and cannulation.

Educational Aims

This course aims to develop the principles of nursing for the injured or acutely unwell adult patient within a variety of complex settings. Students will build upon previous knowledge and skills and consider the clinical leadership of patient centred care. The course will also support developing practice in advanced clinical skills, including management of the deteriorating patient in a safe environment. Emphasis will be given to the simulated management of acute and clinically complex patient presentations.

Learning Outcomes

Think logically, systematically and critically about health and nursing practice, using problem solving and enquiry based learning skills to draw reasoned conclusions, or reach sustainable judgements, related to adult nursing practice.
 

Propose effective collaboration and communication with colleagues, people and families to help them to manage their care needs at any stage of their lives, including during management of the deteriorating patient and in  promoting safe transitions of care.
 

Demonstrate the ability to engage with the multidisciplinary team and to negotiate and advocate on behalf of adult patients and their families so as to support the delivery of complex care to meet individual needs from diagnosis until the end of life.

Safely and effectively manage simulated patient care to evidence accountability, responsibility and clinical leadership in nursing by responding appropriately to any eventuality using sound judgment based on critical evaluation of the nursing evidence base.

Critically evaluate the organisation of nursing work including systematic evaluation of new evidence and technologies, developing analytical and critical decision-making skills for effective application in the care setting.
