Summary
This module considers:
- Introduction to the principles of co-production of care/patient centred nursing care.
- Relating existing graduate research knowledge to introduce evidence based practice concepts including the nature of knowledge, types of evidence and the wider context of holistic practice.
- Pathophysiology/pathogenesis across the lifespan.
- Understanding altered physiological and pathophysiological processes occurring within the body.
- The principles of pharmacology, pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of major categories of medications.
- The care of patients and clients with increasingly complex illnesses requiring multifaceted treatments and care in all settings including end of life care.
- Assessing capacity and making best interest decisions.
- Safeguarding vulnerable people.
- Recognise and assess signs of self-harm and/or suicidal ideation.
- Applied knowledge using scenarios to illustrate the links to informing nursing care, developing care, and exploring treatment options, specifically including pharmacological requirements.
- Professional boundaries, behaviours and considerations for Elective placement.
- Support with Elective Plan and development of learning outcomes.
- Support with Elective Risk Assessment
Target Students
MSc Nursing (Graduate Entry Nursing) Students
Classes
Tutor facilitated hours - 20 hours Web based learning activities - 6 hours Clinical learning - 100 hours Self-directed study (inc. EBL) - 74 hours
Assessment
- 100% Assignment: Written assignment (3000 words). You will be provided with two different case scenarios for your chosen field. Select one and from this identify two care needs. Construct a plan of care for each need, plans will need to be justified and critically appraised with reference to relevant theory and literature. You are required to demonstrate an understanding of relevant underpinning biology, pathophysiology, aetiology, pharmacology.
Assessed by end of designated period
Educational Aims
This module aims to introduce the students to the concept of co-produced care which requires nurses to become facilitators of care. Patient/client centred nursing is at the heart of co-production and acknowledges the patient as an expert in their own care. Students will gain an understanding of evidence based approaches to patient/client centred care and how these can assist in the decision making process to encompass nurse assessment, interventions and safeguarding vulnerable people.Learning Outcomes
Demonstrate a detailed evidence based knowledge of pathophysiological processes to explain pathogenesis and the management of disease processes
Explain the principles of pharmacology in order to explore the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of major categories of medications
Demonstrate knowledge of co-production and integrate the skills of holistic nursing assessment to understand what is important to people, families and carers in order to ensure safe and effective person/client centred care ensuring prompt action to safeguard those who are vulnerable
Analyse how evidence based practice informs knowledge, clinical decision making, planning, intervention and management of patients/clients across the lifespan and during end of life care
Develop academic, numerical, digital, technological literacy and manage devices to ensure safe and effective nursing practice
Plan and identify learning goals for achievement during the elective placement experience
