Summary
This course will focus on behavioural theory in the treatment of anxiety disorders. The content will include:
* Behavioural interventions in the treatment of anxiety disorders: graded exposure in vivo; exposure and response prevention; habit reversal; applied relaxation;
* Developing and sharing a behavioural treatment rationale with the client;
* Facilitated problem-based learning: student case discussion of treatment using behavioural theory and clinical interventions.
Target Students
Students on the PGDip Cognitive Behavioural Therapy.

Educational Aims
This course aims to develop the student’s ability to deliver behavioural interventions for anxiety disorders and depression. This includes the ability to define problems within a behavioural theoretical framework, and to synthesise information to inform clinical decision making and intervention. The student will be expected to demonstrate the ability to develop hypotheses regarding psychological development and maintenance factors (behavioural formulation) to current problems as a basis for implementing behavioural treatment protocols for anxiety disorders and depression. The Scientist Practitioner Model will be used as a foundation and in this context, students will critically analyse and synthesise data to consider problem definition and differential diagnosis.Learning Outcomes
Demonstrate critical knowledge and understanding of behavioural theory and clinical interventions within the CBT model.
Demonstrate critical knowledge of the strengths and limitations of behavioural interventions for anxiety disorders and depression.
Demonstrate knowledge of the role and purpose of idiographic measurement in implementing behaviours and interventions.
Assimilate, critically evaluate and systematically apply behavioural therapy and clinical interventions in the treatment of anxiety disorders and depression.
Categorise and formulate the phenomenology, diagnostic classification and characteristics of anxiety disorders and depression within a behavioural framework.
Construct, interpret and analyse in clinical practice using functional analysis, the development and maintenance of anxiety disorders and depression within a behavioural framework.
Formulate and justify clinical interventions using the Scientist Practitioner Model within the framework of behavioural theory and clinical practice.
Plan, implement and critically evaluate the clinical effectiveness of behavioural interventions for anxiety disorders and depression.
Develop knowledge and skills using psychometric and ideographic measures to assess problems and evaluate clinical outcomes within a behavioural theoretical framework.
Demonstrate skills in identifying and evaluating the behavioural evidence base i.e. NICE Guidance in order to develop a critical understanding of the most up to date behavioural interventions for anxiety disorders and depression to critically evaluate service provision and inform policy.
Challenge arguments and construct, develop and defend a coherent argument using the conventions and skills of academic scholarship.
