The role of narratives, stories, and narrative based therapeutic approaches in relation to contemporary healthcare practice. An exploration of illness and well-being as reflected in a range of fiction and nonfiction narratives

Educational Aims
This course will introduce narrative based approaches for understanding health and ill health. Students will explore therapeutic approaches based on narrative based practices, which focus on the way in which stories and narratives are essential to meaning making within our lives. The Course will also critically analyse the role of creative writing and reading practices in promoting, supporting and enabling health and well-being. Furthermore, it will consider how narrative based approaches can provide innovative tools to support reflection for those working in clinical healthcare practice.Learning Outcomes
Evaluate the role of storytelling, narrative and health in its relevance to contemporary health care practice
Demonstrate the application of narrative critical reading to their field of practice
Critically explore the application of a range of narrative types and subtypes to promote health and recovery
