Summary
This course considers:
- Theoretical content and clinical learning in the practice setting;
- Reflective writing development – incorporating the evidence base, being a reflective practitioner;
- Preparing for Assessment in Clinical Placement – transferability of skills, evidencing learning, and proactive preparation for summative assessment;
- Maximising opportunities in Clinical Placements – identifying learning needs, setting goals, incorporating feedback, preparing for assessment;
- Adult and Child branch students: maternal health;
- Professional responsibilities – working within limitations, risk assessment, incident reporting and management, safeguarding, whistleblowing and clinical governance;
- Professional boundaries, behaviours and considerations for Elective placement;
- Support with Elective Plan and development of learning outcomes;
- Support with Elective Risk Assessment.

Educational Aims
This course aims to provide students with an opportunity to apply learning to clinical practice and to transfer and develop their knowledge, skills, attitudes, values and technical ability for the delivery of safe, effective nursing care. This will focus on working towards meeting professional body requirements for nursing care delivery in the student’s chosen field of practice. Evidence of learning and assessment in practice will be through completion of the Practice Assessment Document (PAD).Learning Outcomes
Demonstrate application of theoretical knowledge and development of skills to work in partnership with service users, carers, service providers and the wider multi-disciplinary team with a focus on transferring knowledge and skills across a diverse range of practice placements.
Demonstrate the ability to consistently provide safe and effective care underpinned by the evidence base at the appropriate level within their context of practice in order to meet Nursing and Midwifery Council Standards of Proficiency for Registered Nurses (2018) as indicated for year 2.
Employ strategies to manage clinical work as part of a wider team under supervision and within their limitations to deliver expected capacity and quality of care whilst demonstrating attitudes values and behaviours in alignment with the Nursing and Midwifery Council’s Code: Professional standards of practice and behaviour for nurses and midwives (NMC 2018).
Apply principles of clinical governance, incident reporting and risk management, to improve quality of care. Demonstrate ability to identify risks to patient safety and undertake appropriate action to escalate concerns.
Plan and identify learning goals for achievement during the elective placement experience.
Demonstrate development as reflective practitioners identifying own learning needs building upon clinical practice experiences, advanced communication skills and feedback to develop goals and inform future practice.
