Summary

This module operates in a flexible way, allowing participants to attend some required workshops, and then to select others from a range of options. They are required to attend:

  • an induction event (one-day workshop)

  • Foundations of Teaching in HE (one-day workshop)

  • Marking Assessment and Evaluation (one-day workshop)

  • an assessment workshop (half-day)

    …and then a minimum of one further day of relevant learning and teaching workshops

  • Target Students

    The module is aimed at staff/postgraduate students who are teaching part-time at the University of Nottingham (at least 30 hours per year).

    Classes

    Participants attend a total of four and a half days (approx 6 hours per day) of workshops for the ATP. These are spaced at approximate monthly intervals. Once these workshops have been attended, participants move on the complete the Teaching Development Report which forms the assessment for this module.

    Educational Aims

    The ATP aims to provide part-time teachers at the University with the basic skills they need to carry their teaching role to a high standard. The ATP aims to:Enhance and developing skills in learning and teaching.Encourage participants to become reflective practitioners within the field of higher education teaching Review new methods for providing innovative teaching and effective learning and apply them to participants’ teaching situations. Encourage the sharing of experiences of working across a range of teaching situations. Enable participants to engage with the University’s community of part-time teachers for continuing professional development, networking and support.

    Learning Outcomes

    When participants have completed this module, they should be able to:

  • Outline some key theories on learning and teaching in HE and discuss how these theories influence how they teach within the context of an international university.
  • Reflect critically using a variety of feedback sources to develop an aspect of their teaching or assessment practice.
  • Use varied teaching/assessment/feedback practices to enhance student learning in their own context.
  • Plan, use and evaluate teaching or assessment practices that take into account the diversity of students.
  • Work collegially with colleagues from diverse academic backgrounds to develop a broader understanding of learning and teaching in HE.
