Summary

This module provides students with the opportunity to develop the skills required for academic and personal development to enhance their learning experience and better prepare them for success in their studies and beyond. The module is taught as a series of workshops to develop and build skills alongside academic study. Some workshops are compulsory and others are chosen by students based on the skills that are best suited to their stream. Students must take a minimum of 30 units of workshops (typical workshop is weighted at 2 units but also gain units for other activities beneficial to their studies such as study groups, peer mentor meetings and online learning) with no maximum. 

Target Students

Students studying BSc & MSci (Hons) Natural Science.

Classes

Skills workshops over the course of the year plus online workshops. • Maths 4 Scientists workshop • Chemistry 4 Biologists workshop • Regular study groups for all subjects through the year • Study groups for Maths and Physics

Assessed by end of spring semester

Educational Aims

• To introduce students to the university environment, outline processes and set expectations of learning.• To develop key skills required for successful academic study.• To develop assessment literacy across a range of assessment types.• To develop good working practice for success in a multidisciplinary degree.• To build an appreciation of personal development and reflection and their role in employment and study.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this module a student is expected to be able to: 
 

1.   Demonstrate a range of skills relevant to independent study including personal effectiveness, research skills and communication. 

2.   Recognize key elements of academic writing style and be able to incorporate evidence from external sources using accurate citation and referencing.

3.   Engage with collaborative opportunities through workshops to develop and enhance skills development. 

4.   Set goals and assess development through reflection on feedback and learning experiences, identify areas for development from feedback.
