Summary

Learners will explore applications of microphones and their placement within a variety of acoustic spaces in order to record performances of traditional instrumentation integrated into a digital production workflow. Recording and mixing techniques will be practiced and evaluated with reference to current standards.

Reassessments will take the form of the original requirements: an essay and a portfolio of recordings.

Target Students

Only available to Year 3 Single and Joint Hons Music students including Liberal Arts. There are limited places on this module.

Educational Aims

Attain a broad understanding of recording studio signal paths and workflows. Understand digital audio principles. Acquire practical skills in a variety of monaural and stereo microphone recording techniques. Record and edit audio recordings. Understand and apply corrective audio processing e.g. EQ, phase alignment, dynamics. Apply core mix techniques. Adhere to industry standard levels for a variety of deliverable media types. Understand and use appropriate digital file types.
