Summary

This module will introduce students to approaches to composing music that responds to and interacts with work by non-musical artists. Students will compose choral works on poetic texts and scores for short films.

Target Students

Available to all Year 3 students including Liberal Arts, exchange and subsidiary students who have successfully passed MUSI1010 Skills in Composition. This module cannot be taken if the student has previously taken MUSI2029.

Classes

8 x 2hr lecture; 8 x 1hr Workshop; 2 x 3hr Presentation. Lectures and workshops will run consecutively over a 3-hour block for 8 weeks. Presentations sessions will give students the opportunity to discuss their work-in-progress and receive formative feedback.

Assessment

Assessed by end of spring semester

Educational Aims

To develop advanced skills in composition in a particular style or idiom by undertaking individually directed work on a portfolio.

Learning Outcomes

Advanced skills in compositional technique; 
Awareness of issues of style and texture; 
High level presentational skills; 
Critical awareness of aesthetic issues underpinning musical composition.
