Summary

This module develops core skills in professional digital composition, using Logic Pro DAW software.
Topics addressed may include:
• Analysis and study of digital composition techniques
• Recording audio and creative sampling techniques
• Sound design using synthesis
• Audio and MIDI programming and editing
• Composing for the moving image
• Completion of Industry-specific composition briefs
• Application of professional mix processing techniques
• Understanding digital audio and industry-standard export formats and reference levels

Target Students

Available to Year 3 Single and Joint Hons Music students, including Liberal Arts, and subsidiary students who have successfully passed MUSI1010 Skills in Composition. Students are unable to enrol on this module if they have previously taken MUSI2019 Digital Composition Level 2. There are limited places on this module. Cap applies to both MUSI2019 and MUSI3041 combined.

Educational Aims

To provide a basic grounding in computer-based music composition and industrystandard software in order that students can:Demonstrate ability to adapt and apply compositional techniques in the digitalrealmAttain a broad understanding of common synthesis techniques.Program and operate digital sampler creatively.Compose music relevant to industry related project briefsRecord and edit audio and MIDIWork with music/sound design alongside digital video formats.Apply core mix techniques in the completion of projectsUnderstand industry standard audio file formats

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge and understanding – outcomes which describe broadly the subject matter of the programme/module: 
• A basic grounding in computer-based music composition and industry-standard software;
• Understanding of demands and expectations of commercial project briefs.

Intellectual skills – the abilities required to process the subject matter:
• Comprehension of the function, potential and interrelation of industry-standard music production software and hardware;
• Development of aesthetic understanding appropriate to different industry briefs.

Professional/practical skills – those skills specific to a particular subject area (option):
• Mastery of industry-standard music production software and hardware;
• Production of musical and multimedia works suitable to commercial needs.

Transferable (key) skills – skills such as oral and written communication, team work, self management, problems solving, critical thinking, professionalism etc:
• Confidence with advanced computer technology;
• Capacity to produce creative product to a precise brief and deadline.
