Summary
This year-long module offers the opportunity for intensive development of performing skills. Students receive regular individual lessons across the year with their assigned vocal or instrumental tutor, with whom they agree on a selection of pieces to be studied. Beyond the one-to-one lessons, the module consists of a set of workshops and lectures, which aim to complement individual progression in vocal or instrumental studies. During the autumn, a key theme of these practical-theoretical group sessions is performance contexts and reflections, which introduces students to elements of performance in various cultures and genres through space and time. Key topics include expressivity, identities and authenticities, liveness and recordings, interpretation, and value judgement. In the spring, the module also provides voice- and instrument-specific performance classes. Throughout the year there are regular opportunities for students to share their work in progress, both as soloists and in small group set-ups, where questions relating to stage presence, communication strategies, and interaction are discussed.
Assessment will be through an end-of-year performance (normally containing DipABRSM level or equivalent pieces / as appropriate to the given musical genre), and short critical-reflective written works highlighting one’s development as a performer.
