Summary
This course is a continuation of MATH1011 providing ancillary mathematics knowledge and skills for students majoring in chemistry-based courses. Complex numbers are introduced and used with a study of solutions of linear second-order differential equations. Matrix algebra is developed to solve systems of equations and to study eigenvalue problems. The differential calculus of several variables is introduced. An introduction is provided to algebra of matrices and their applications in chemistry. Topics are:
- complex numbers;
- solution of second-order ODEs;
- differential calculus of several variables;
- vector algebra;
- matrix algebra.
Target Students
First year students in the School of Chemistry with an A-level in Mathematics
Co-requisites
Modules you must take in the same academic year, or have taken in a previous year, to enrol in this module:
Classes
- Two 1-hour workshops each week for 10 weeks
- One 1-hour lecture each week for 10 weeks
Each week there will normally be two lecture hours and a further hour of worked examples or problem workshops.
Assessment
- 10% Coursework 1: Assignment
- 10% Coursework 2: Assignment
- 80% Exam 1 (2-hour): Written examination

Educational Aims
In concert with thecourse MATH1011, to provide students with knowledge of the main mathematical techniques in following a Chemistry-based course.Learning Outcomes
Knowledge and understanding of mathematical methods to solve ODEs, and to use matrices and complex numbers.
On successful completion of this course students will be able to:
L1 - solve second order linear ODEs.
L2 - differentiate functions of more than one variable.
L3 - use matrix methods to solve systems of linear equations.
L4 - solve eigenvalue problems of matrices.
