Summary
The project involves 5 students working as a team to design a product from initial concept to fully engineered drawings. Starting from a design brief prepared by the supervisor or ‘client’, the group will be required to devise and evaluate alternative design concepts, undertake the detailed engineering analysis and mechanical design, select suitable materials and methods of manufacture and assess costs and the marketability of the product. Manufacture a prototype or proof of concept and evaluate its performance.
Target Students

Educational Aims
To give students experience of working in a group on a major complete indeterminate design exercise as preparation for team working in industry. Students will have opportunity to apply their skills in problem solving, communication, information retrieval, working with others and the effective use of general IT facilities.Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module students will be able to:
LO1 - Recognise the importance of engineering science and the design process in innovatively meeting user needs, taking account of commercial, economic and social contexts.
LO2 - Demonstrate an advanced level of knowledge and understanding of a wide range of engineering materials, processes and components.
LO3 - Identify and use tools and processes to work collaboratively with others in a professional and ethical manner.
LO4 - Understand the breadth of available sources of information and the exploit them critically.
LO5 - Appropriately use written, verbal and graphical communications to capture and communicate engineering activity.
