Summary
This module runs throughout the autumn semester. The module aims to provide the opportunity to work in small, multidisciplinary teams to address a grand challenge in the area of additive Manufacturing. Although some variation in content is expected due to the varying nature of the possible challenges, it is expected that a common project will take the following form:
- Discussion of challenge with the tutor and setting of challenge brief
- Literature review and fact finding
- Definition of challenge brief and setting of aims, objectives, deliverables, methodology and time-plan
- Experimental/theoretical/computational work
- Analysis and interpretation of results
- Presentation of results
In many cases the project will take the form of a design and make project in which the stages of the project will include the evaluation of alternative design concepts, engineering analysis, prototyping, performance evaluation and improvement.
Re-assessment
Students who fail this module overall and are required to complete a re-assessment will be re-assessed in all failed assessment components. The re-assessment mark for the module will be a combination of the marks from components passed first time and the components which have been re-assessed.
Target Students
Students on the MSc in Additive Manufacturing Course and appropriate PGT and CDTs.
Assessment
- 30% Presentation 1: 30% presentation
- 20% Report 1: 20% Group Poster
- 50% Report 2: 50% final report
Assessed by end of autumn semester
Educational Aims
The aim of this module is to enable students to develop skills in analysing a grand challenge and developing a method of tackling this that effectively uses the various skills available in a multi-disciplinary team and locally available equipment and knowledge.Learning Outcomes
LO1 – Evaluate a grand challenge, and make appropriate engineering decisions considering opportunities offered by AM technologies, sustainability of the processed and impact of the proposed solution.
LO2 – Plan a programme of work to address the grand challenge, effectively using the skills in the group and the knowledge and equipment available.
LO3 – Operate and communicate effectively with all stakeholders and derive useful and actionable feedback from all sources.
LO4 – Work effectively in a team environment to deliver a solution under time constraints.
LO5 – Make professional standard report and presentation that presents the grand challenge to a technical, but non-specialist audience.
