Summary

The project aims to give experience in the practice of engineering at a professional level. It involves the planning, execution and reporting of a programme of work which will normally involve a mixture of experimental, theoretical and computational work together with a review of relevant previous work in the field. The detailed content is a matter for discussion between the student and his/her supervisor.

Re-assessment
Students who fail this module overall and are required to complete a re-assessment will be re-assessed by coursework. The re-assessment coursework mark alone will be used to determine whether students satisfy progression requirements.

Target Students

Students studying for a Masters degree in mechanical engineering, who are in their final year. This is a compulsory module for these students only.

Assessment

Assessed by end of spring semester

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module students will be able to:

LO1 - Demonstrate the ability to plan and execute a successful individual research project taking into account time, budget, program risk, ethical constraints and health and safety. - AHEP4: M8, M9, M15

LO2 - Formulate and conduct project that is either linked to a research question or an industrial problem. - AHEP4: M2

LO3 - Extract and synthesise pertinent data, approaches, methods, tools, codes and techniques from identified technical literature and other information sources. - AHEP4: M4, M13

LO4 - Use and develop appropriate tools and methodologies such as CFD, FEA, Matlab, and/or experimental techniques, depending on the scope and subject area of the individual project. - AHEP4: M3

LO5 - Communicate the outcome of the research in a publishable format and via an oral presentation. - AHEP4: M17

LO6 - Demonstrate engagement with preparation for future professional practice through a professional portfolio that includes consideration of ethical concerns in the context of the project, skills audits, record of self-learning and evidence of reflective practice AHEP4: M8, M18
