Summary

A major group-based project module. Students working as a team design, manufacture and develop a product. Starting from the design brief prepared by the supervisor, the group will be required to manage the project, devise and evaluate alternative design concepts, undertake the detailed engineering analysis and mechanical design, manufacture a prototype, evaluate its performance and undertake development work to improve it.

Re-assessment
Students who fail this module overall and are required to complete a re-assessment will be required to repeat enrolment in the module

Assessment

Assessed by end of spring semester

Educational Aims

The module aims to teach the following within the context of design of an engineering product:Be able to interpret an identified need and, by discussion with the potential user or customer, translate this into a Statement of Requirements for a prototype product to meet the need.Be able to use knowledge of engineering science, materials, and manufacturing processes to generate a range of solutions to meet the Requirements and then to select the solution(s) for further development and eventual embodiment.Be able, working as a team, to plan the execution of the design and making tasks, to be aware of, standards, legislative requirements and risks of all sorts, and to respond to overcome problems as they arise. To document the work done for communication within the team, for communication with your customer and to record decisions made for the benefit of anyone developing or maintaining your design.Be able to demonstrate to others that valid decisions are being made throughout the project and to validate and evaluate the final deliverables.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module students will be able to:

LO1 - Develop a product using a professional design process and evaluation techniques to make value-based engineering decisions in complex scenarios. - AHEP4: 5, 12, 13

LO2 - Differentiate between process progression options and methodologies to progress though the design process to deliver a prototype. - AHEP4: 9, 10, 12

LO3 - Manage an engineering design and manufacturing project from statement of requirements through to delivery of solution. - AHEP4: 5, 6

LO4 - Operate and communicate effectively with all stakeholders in a team environment and derive useful and actionable feedback from all sources. - AHEP4: 11, 15, 17

LO5 - Appraise and manage the challenges associated with customer driven project especially those associated with management, ethics and the more commercial aspects faced by professional engineers. - AHEP4: 9, 16
