Summary
An advanced module in fluid mechanics applicable to a wide range of engineering disciplines. Topics to be covered include:
- Fundamental theory of turbulence
- Statistical description of turbulence
- Turbulent boundary layers and their structures
- Turbulent flow control
- Turbulence modelling and CFD
- Experimental facilities and techniques
- Practical and industrial examples
Re-assessment
Students who fail this module overall and are required to complete a re-assessment will be re-assessed by exam. The re-assessment exam mark alone will be used to determine whether students satisfy progression requirements.
Target Students
Part II undergraduates, Part III undergraduates and MSc students.
Assessment
- 30% Coursework 1: Extended laboratory report
- 70% Exam 1 (2-hour)
Assessed by end of autumn semester
Educational Aims
Develop understanding and application skills of basic concepts and fundamental knowledge in turbulence and turbulent flows in engineering.Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module students will be able to:
LO1 – Comprehend the basic concept of turbulence.
LO2 – Apply the theory of turbulence to understand the behaviour of turbulent flows.
LO3 – Comprehend the experimental techniques to analyse turbulent flows.
LO4 – Apply the theory of turbulence to develop techniques in turbulence modelling.
