Summary
This module will cover design, processing and materials aspects of Additive Manufacturing and 3D Printing technbologies, as well as the current and potential applications of the technology in a wide variety of sectors. Topic addressed will ionclude commercial and experimental systems, material requirements, design for Additive Manufacturing, software and systems, as well as case studies of AM in industry and society.
Target Students
Primarily for 4th/3rd year students in the Department of Mechanical, Materials and Manufacturing Engineering. MSc postgraduate students.Passing Mark/Grade: 40% for UG BEng; 50% for UG MEng ; 50% for PG MSc
Classes
- One 2-hour lecture each week for 12 weeks
Usually 2 hours per week to include lectures and a lab visit
Assessment
- 30% Coursework 1: Individual Report and Presentation, 3D Printing Assignment
- 70% Exam 1 (1-hour-30-minute): 1.5 hour exam
Educational Aims
The aims of this module is to provide students with detailed knowledge of the various Additive Manufacturingtechnologies including specific design, material and process principles. Student will gain an insight into the currentand future applications as well as the research and developments required for advancement of this technologyLearning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module students will be able to:
LO1: Demonstrate understanding of methods of Additive Manufacturing or 3D Printing and justify selection of a specific technology for a particular application. (comprehension and application) – AHEP4: M1, M12; EAC: PO1
LO2: Demonstrate understanding of the requirements of materials for Additive Manufacturing or 3D Printing and the effect of processing on material microstructure (knowledge and comprehension) – AHEP4: M1; EAC: PO1
LO3: Evaluate the impact of AM&3DP technologies on various industrial sectors and society (comprehension and application) – AHEP4: M7; EAC: PO7
LO4: Critically assess the advantages and limitations of AM & 3DP and its suitability versus conventional manufacturing for a specific application. (knowledge, comprehension and application) – AHEP4: M18; EAC: PO11
