Summary
Summary of Content
The project aims to give experience in the practice of engineering at a professional level. It involves the planning, execution and reporting of a programme of work which will normally involve a mixture of experimental, theoretical and computational work together with a review of relevant previous work in the field. The detailed content is a matter for discussion between the student and his/her supervisor.
Re-assessment
Students who fail this module overall and are required to complete a re-assessment will be re-assessed by coursework. The re-assessment coursework mark alone will be used to determine whether students satisfy progression requirements.
Target Students
Year 4 MEng students studying Mechanical EngineeringPassing Mark/Grade: 50% for UG MEng
Classes
- One 2-hour workshop each week for 4 weeks
The project starts at the beginning of the Autumn Semester and the final report must be submitted by the end of week~9 of the Spring Semester. There will be regular contact with the supervisor. It is expected that 50% of the student's effort will take place during the Spring Semester.
Assessment
- 50% Coursework 1: 8 page camera-ready conference paper
- 10% Oral: oral presentation
- 30% Coursework 2: progress report
- 5% Coursework 3: Continuous assessment of the student autumn
- 5% Coursework 4: Continuous assessment of the student spring

On successful completion of this module students will be able to:
LO1 : Extract and synthesis pertinent data and information from identified technical literature and other information sources – AHEP4: M2, M4; EAC: PO2, PO4.
LO2 : Demonstrate the ability to plan and execute a successful individual research project within time and budgetary constraints – AHEP4: M9 , M15; EAC: PO12.
LO3 : Communicate the outcome of the research in a publishable format and via an oral presentation – AHEP4: M17; EAC: PO9.
LO4 : Use and develop appropriate tools and methodologies such as CFD, FEA, Matlab, and/or experimental techniques, depending on the scope and subject area of the individual project – AHEP4: M3; EAC: PO5.
LO5 : Apply knowledge of mathematics, science, engineering fundamentals and an engineering specialisation to the solution of complex engineering problems - AHEP4: M1; EAC: PO1.
LO6 : Design solutions for complex engineering problems and design systems, components or processes that meet specified needs with appropriate consideration for public health and safety, cultural, societal and environmental considerations - AHEP4: M5, M8; EAC: PO3, PO8.
