Summary
In this module a project title is identified and selected for the students' Major Project module.
Students undertake a body of research and investigation to enable a detailed brief/specification to be written for the projects start. The design councils double diamond model of the design process will be used, and this module will complete the first diamond. The students will also have to consider and plan their aproach to the second dimond.
Re-assessment
Students who fail this module overall and are required to complete a re-assessment will be re- assessed in all failed assessment components. The re-assessment mark for the module will be a combination of the marks from components passed first time and the components which have been re-assessed.
Target Students
Students undertaking Product Design and Manufacture.
Classes
- One 1-hour lecture each week for 11 weeks
Assessment
- 10% Coursework 1: Project Pitch(1 credit)
- 90% Coursework 2: research report and project plan (9 credits)
Assessed by end of autumn semester
Educational Aims
By the end of the module students will have created a plan for the final year project. They will have conducted a project research report, identified critical information that will impact their design project, formally presented their project proposal and developed and written complete project plans. The module will not only have prepared them for their project but it will have taught research and project planning skills and techniques.Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module students will have:
LO1: Understand what makes a good project proposal and apply this criteria to the selection of a project. (AHEP 17)
LO2: Demonstrate an ability to investigate and identify information that will form the basis of a detailed design brief. (AHEP 4,11)
LO3: Demonstrate ability to identify risk and organise the steps and stages of their major project to mitigate risks. (AHEP 4,8,15)
LO4: Demonstrate the ability to review research to create a detailed design brief. (AHEP 9,15)
