Summary
The project aims to give experience in the practice of engineering and scientific approaches at a professional level. It involves the planning, execution and reporting of a programme of work which will normally involve a mixture of experimental, and/or theoretical and and/or computational methods and analysis together with a detailed and critical review of relevant previous literature in the field. The detailed content and project balance relating to the extent of experimental/theoretical/computational/ design work is a matter for discussion between the student and his/her supervisor, factoring in the students course.
Target Students
BEng students studying Mechanical Engineering in the Department of Mechanical, Materials and Manufacturing Engineering.
Classes
- One 2-hour workshop each week for 2 weeks
- One 2-hour workshop each week for 5 weeks
Assessment
- 10% Coursework 1: Report on planning, Report (max 500 words) identifying key literature / risks/ ethics and time chart. Plus, a Digital presentation (5mins)
- 20% Coursework 2: Progress report - max 2000 words including a critical evaluation of literature
- 50% Coursework 3: Dissertation - 10000 word report
- 10% Coursework 4: Continuous assessment of the student by supervisor
- 10% Oral Presentation: Oral presentation - 15mins duration and a Project Poster
Educational Aims
Deliver a detailed project dissertation involving engineering and scientific methods and analysis at a professional level.- Develop skills in the planning, risk, ethics, execution and reporting of a programme of work.- To perform cutting edge experimental, and/or design and/or theoretical and/or computational work- Deliver and critically evaluate a detailed review of relevant previous work in the field.(Note: The detailed content and project balance relating to the experimental/theoretical/design/computational work is a matter for discussion between the student and his/her supervisor, factoring in the students course). It may be linked to a research group and/or an industrial company.Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module students will be able to:
LO1: Demonstrate the ability to plan and execute a successful individual technical project taking into account, time, budgetary, risk and ethical constraints. AHEP4: C9, C15, EAC:PO12
LO2: Manage a research or industrially linked project to conclusion in the context of the scope and subject area of the project.AHEP4: C15, EAC: PO12
LO3: Identify and critically evaluate sources of information to comprehensively understand the area of study. AHEP4: C2, EAC: PO2.
LO4: Use appropriate tools and methodologies depending on the scope and subject area of the individual project (such as CFD, FEA, computational, design and/or experimental and investigative techniques etc). AHEP4: C3, C4, EAC: PO4, PO5
LO5: Communicate the outcome of the research in a technical dissertation and also via an oral presentation. AHEP4: C17, EAC : PO9
