Summary

Introduction to numerical methods in engineering, Finite Element Analysis (FEA) of structures, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) for thermo-fluids problems. Coursework on running FEA and CFD software.

Re-assessment
Students who fail this module overall and are required to complete a re-assessment will be re-assessed by coursework. The re-assessment coursework mark alone will be used to determine whether students satisfy progression requirements.

Assessment

Assessed by end of autumn semester

Educational Aims

To provide students with a basic knowledge and understanding of the mainstream computer modelling techniques used in modern engineering practice, including Finite Element techniques and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD).

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module students will be able to:

LO1 - Understand the theoretical background of numerical methods used in engineering analysis, Finite Element and Computational Fluid Dynamics techniques. - AHEP4: 1, 2

LO2 - Identify and apply appropriate computer modelling techniques to solve specific engineering problems. - AHEP4: 3

LO3 - Demonstrate an understanding of how computer programmes can be used to solve practical solid and fluid mechanics problems in engineering. - AHEP4: 3

LO4 - Evaluate the accuracy and sources of error in solving solid and fluid mechanics problems in engineering using computational models. - AHEP4: 2

LO5 - Gain hands-on experience of running state of the art FEA and CFD software codes widely used in industry - AHEP4: 13
