Summary
In this module students will scope, plan, execute and report an engineering project. The scoping and planning stage involves development of project context and background, aim and objectives, project planning and Gantt chart and, project risk assessment. Students will prepare an Interim Report part-way through the project and build on it in the preparation of their final dissertation. Their ability to communicate the work appropriately will also be assessed via a project presentation given towards the end of the project and in the design of a project impact poster. The individual nature of the project is such that the content of each will be different but every project will contain elements from one of more of these areas: experimental, computational, analytical, design and manufacture.
Target Students
BEng students studying Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering or Manufacturing Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering.

Educational Aims
This module aims to give students experience in scoping, planning, executing and reporting an engineering project that supports the orientation of the degree course being studied. The project will involve sourcing and appropriate use of relevant previous work and will normally involve elements from one or more of these areas: experimental, analytical, computational, design and manufacture work and thorough analysis of results. Project preparation is assessed through a proposal and planning report and the project culminates in the preparation of a dissertation that clearly presents the work done and the outcomes achieved. Professional skills are developed and assessed through the project module.Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module students will be able to:
LO1 - Demonstrate the ability to scope, plan and manage an individual engineering project taking into account time, budget, program risk, ethical constraints and health and safety where necessary. AHEP4: C8, C9, C15
LO2 - Demonstrate the ability to source and make appropriate use of prior research and existing information in planning, scoping and executing an engineering project, including the context and importance of the work proposed. AHEP4: C2, C4
LO3 – Demonstrate the capability to identify and apply the technologies, approaches, methods, tools, codes and techniques to execute an engineering project based on its scope and focus to generate identifiable project output. - AHEP4: C3, C4, C13
LO4 – Demonstrate the ability to communicate the outcomes of all stages of an engineering project through written reports, presentation and poster, and final dissertation. - AHEP4: C17
L05 – Demonstrate the professional skills and attributes of meeting management (planning and documenting), independence, resilience and consistency of effort. AHEP4: C15
LO6 - Demonstrate engagement with preparation for future professional practice through a professional portfolio that includes consideration of ethical concerns in the context of the project, skills audits, record of self-learning and evidence of reflective practice AHEP4: C8, C18
