Summary
An introductory module to the specialist area of materials for low carbon transport:
- Overview of policy, regulation and materials requirements for low-carbon transport.
- Emerging propulsion materials and systems (fuel cells, rechargeable batteries, supercapacitors, superconductors) for road vehicles, trains and aircrafts.
- Advanced metal and alloys (steel, titanium alloys, aluminium alloys, magnesium alloys and superalloys) for transport applications.
- Advanced composites including carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) and glass fibre reinforced polymer (GFRP) for transport applications.
- Ceramic thermal barrier coatings for aircraft gas turbine engines.
Re-assessment
Students who fail this module overall and are required to complete a re-assessment will be re-assessed by exam. The re-assessment exam mark alone will be used to determine whether students satisfy progression requirements.
Target Students
Mechanical engineering students, also suitable for students studying other engineering degree courses with an appropriate background.
Assessment
- 25% Coursework 1: 1,500 word report
- 75% Exam 1 (2-hour)
Assessed by end of spring semester
Educational Aims
To provide an understanding and knowledge of property requirements and key materials for a variety of transport systems (e.g., road vehicles, trains and aircrafts), with particular reference to how to design, select and manufacture advanced materials to move towards low- and zero-emission transport.Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module students will be able to:
LO1 - demonstrate knowledge and understanding of material usage in transport industries with reference to operating conditions and material properties.
LO2 – perform material selection analysis based on analysis of operating conditions, material properties and other relevant factors including legislation.
LO3 - understand development trends and directions for future transport systems including material requirements for improving efficiency, safety and sustainability.
LO4 – extract and use relevant information from external sources.
