Summary
The module will give students in depth understanding of technical capability of modern manufacturing processes in relation to the design of products. This will enable the analysis of various manufacturing processes, tooling designs/machinery and their capabilities to achieve the required product quality measures.
Firstly, the module will discuss the capability of some single manufacturing processes in respect to: particularities in tooling designs characteristic machinery calculations workpiece materials and their mechanical/metallurgical properties after processing dimensional/geometrical tolerance of manufactured components, surface finish part geometrical restrictions process productivity cost analysis in relation to the production scale.
Secondly, the module will introduce the capability of interconnected manufacturing processes in respect to: compatibility of coupling manufacturing processes, production size and cost analysis for interconnected manufacturing processes.
Re-assessment:
Students who fail this module overall and are required to complete a re-assessment will be re-assessed by 100% exam. The re-assessment exam mark alone will be used to determine whether students satisfy progression requirements.
Target Students
Third year Manufacturing Engineering students, Product Design and Manufacture (PDM) students.
Assessment
- 10% Coursework 1: CW1 10% LO1, LO2, LO3
- 20% Coursework 2: CW2 20% LO1, LO2, LO3, LO4
- 70% Exam 1 (2-hour): EX1 70% LO1, LO2, LO3, LO4
Assessed by end of autumn semester
Educational Aims
The aim of the module is to develop students' abilities to understand and assess the capability of single and combined manufacturing processes. The module will give students an in depth understanding of the technical capability of modern manufacturing processes in relation to product design. This will enable the analysis of various manufacturing processes, tooling designs/machinery and their capability to achieve the required product quality measures. Firstly, the module will discuss the capability of some single manufacturing processes. Secondly, the module will take into discussion the capability of interconnected manufacturing processes in respect to: compatibility of coupling manufacturing processes production size cost analysis on interconnected manufacturing processes. At the end of the module the students will be capable of choosing optimal manufacturing routes for the production of designated products.Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module students will be able to:
LO1 – Knowledge and comprehension.
Comprehend the methods to evaluate the capability of different manufacturing processes this is based on various key measures: from part design specifications to process ability of dealing with various material properties, scale of production, complexity of tooling, etc. Understand the basic principles on manufacturing a product by selecting appropriate capabilities of each individual manufacturing process for each part/group of parts. (AHEP 2, 13)
LO2 – Comprehension and application.
Apply the above methods to: i) select manufacturing processes capable to meet the part technical and cost-efficiency specifications ii) evaluate the capability of groups of manufacturing processes to meet the specifications of a product. (AHEP 2, 13, 7)
LO3 – Comprehension, application, moving towards analysis.
Recognise key requirements of a part/product so that it fulfils its functionality and then select processes capable of manufacturing them at the required scale of production. (AHEP 13)
LO4 – Comprehension, application.
Clearly report analysis of data and engineering calculations using an appropriate level of explanation showing evidence of judgement in selecting analysis techniques. (AHEP 1, 2)
