Summary

The module will introduce the relevant theoretical background and fundamental concepts for different types of automated manufacturing systems. Focus will be placed on understanding various aspects of production line and assembly systems development including planning, design and implementation. Methods and indicators for quantitative production performance and cost analysis will also be covered.

Re-assessment:  Students who fail this module overall and are required to complete a re-assessment will be re-assessed by exam. The re-assessment exam mark alone will be used to determine whether students satisfy progression requirements.

Target Students

Students must have taken MMME3041 (Manufacturing Automation Technologies) or have equivalent knowledge covering machining processes, basic knowledge of robotics, numerical control and general automation principles and basic knowledge of computer systems.

Assessment

Assessed by end of spring semester

Educational Aims

The aim of the module is to enable students to develop a sound understanding of flexible automated manufacturing solutions as well as their role, advantages, and limitations in the context of today's and tomorrow's manufacturing challenges. At the end of the module, students should be able to evaluate the suitability of flexible automated manufacturing solutions for given production scenarios, specify appropriate system structures, and evaluate existing flexible automated manufacturing solutions. Through the project-based coursework the students should develop communication and solution finding skills to address the challenges of complex dynamic manufacturing solutions in a team with different responsibilities.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module students will have:

LO1 - Awareness of advanced automation technologies and their role in achieving manufacturing system flexibility. Ability to select appropriate technology for specific flexible automation problems.  (AHEP 13)

LO2 - Ability to design and size flexible automated manufacturing systems based the specific production requirements of a given product/component mix (family).  (AHEP 1, 3)

LO3 - Awareness and application of techniques and models for analysis of new or existing flexible automated manufacturing systems.  (AHEP 2)

LO4 - Capability to evaluate and recognise suitable product/component families for flexible automated manufacture Awareness of the strength and weaknesses as well as application areas for flexible manufacturing systems.  (AHEP 4)

LO5 - Ability to work as part of a team to analyse complex system design solutions and communicate assessment results for a given problem context.  (AHEP 16, 17)
