Summary
The aim of this module is to provide an introduction to most of the main fields within Aerospace technology such that students understand the in this field. The main topics covered are:
• A brief history of aircraft
• Aerodynamics
• An introduction to Aircraft Propulsion
• An introduction to Flight dynamics
• An introduction to aerospace materials and structures
• Airworthiness
• Future developments in aircraft
Target Students
Third Year BEng Mechanical EngineeringThird Year MEng Mechanical EngineeringFourth Year MEng Mechanical Engineering Available to JYA/Erasmus students.
Classes
- One 2-hour lecture each week for 12 weeks
Assessment
- 30% Coursework 1: Communicate the outcomes either in formal report or presentation.
- 70% Exam 1 (2-hour)
Educational Aims
To provide students with the basic understanding of the technology applied in the aerospace industry ready for access to modules in the School which develop several topics further.Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module students will be able to:
LO1: Apply core engineering science (from pre-requisite and current modules) to evaluate aircraft wing performance – AHEP4: M2; EAC: PO2
LO2: Apply core engineering science (from pre-requisite and current modules) to evaluate gas turbine thermofluid systems – AHEP4: M2; EAC: PO2
LO3: Demonstrate understanding and perform calculations relating to basic flight mechanics and flight dynamics – AHEP4: M1; EAC: PO1
LO4: Demonstrate understanding and perform calculations relating to basic aerospace materials and structures – AHEP4: M1; EAC: PO1
LO5: Demonstrate ability to communicate familiarity with and understanding of the lectured material relating to rotorcraft, airworthiness, avionics, astronautics – AHEP4: M1; EAC: PO1
LO6 : Communicate the outcome of an aerospace project in an appropriate and professional way – AHEP4: M17; EAC: PO9
