Summary

This module encompasses a number of elements including: maths, essential professional engineering skills, IT skills, and essential project skills. These skills will be covered to a level appropriate to second year aerospace engineering students.
This module includes an integrating group project that draws on knowledge from the other modules delivered in this year of the course. The project goes through an entire project lifecycle from statement of requirements through concept, detail design, manufacture, test and evaluation. An output from the project is an aerospace relevant artefact that meets given specifications.

Target Students

Students must be on one of the Aerospace Engineering courses H402, H40A, H400, H40B.

Assessment

Assessed in both autumn & spring semest

Educational Aims

Building on MMME1050, this module aims to complete the provision of skills needed for a professional engineering to operate appropriately. The maths element completes the provision of maths teaching required to underpin engineering science within the Aerospace Engineering courses. The management element gives all the basic aerospace relevant management elements.

Learning Outcomes

LO1 - Solve constant coefficient 2nd order ODEs using the auxiliary equation and Laplace transforms. (AHEP 1)

LO3 - Understand and apply multi-variable calculus and vector calculus typically used in solving engineering problems. (AHEP 1)

LO4 - Use Fourier Series to represent periodic functions and to solve appropriate differential equations. (AHEP 1)

LO5 – Apply system engineering practice to elicit and analyse the design requirements for an aerospace system (AHEP 2,6)

LO6 - Organise a team that empowers members, working ethically and effectively to plan and manage risk to deliver an engineering project (AHEP 8,9,11,15,16)

LO7 - Develop a sustainable design solution using the available literature and engineering principles to an aerospace system of reasonable complexity (AHEP 2,4,7)

LO8 - Communicate effectively the technical merits and legal compliance of the design to technical and lay audiences (AHEP 17)

LO9 - Reflect on personal performance, identifying skills used and target areas for further development (AHEP 18)

LO2 - Solve PDEs through separation of variables relevant in an engineering context. (AHEP 1)
