Summary
An intermediate module covering the subjects of: Analysis methods applicable to engineering design including:
- combined loading
- yield criteria
- elastic-plastic deformations
- deflection of beams
- strain energy methods
- asymmetrical bending
- thick-walled cylinders
- shear stresses in beams
- thermal stress and strain
- elastic instability (buckling)
- fatigue and fracture
- finite element analysis
Case studies are presented to relate topics covered in the module to actual design situations. Practical application is taught through laboratory and design exercises.
Re-assessment
Students who fail this module overall and are required to complete a re-assessment will be re-assessed by exam. The re-assessment exam mark alone will be used to determine whether students satisfy progression requirements.
Target Students
Primarily for Year 2 UG students studying Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering in the Department of Mechanical, Materials and Manufacturing Engineering.
Assessment
- 25% Laboratory 1: Lab: LO3
- 25% Exam 1 (2-hour): January Exam
- 50% Exam 2 (2-hour): Spring Exam: LO1, LO2
Assessed by end of spring semester
Educational Aims
The aim of this module is to introduce more advanced topics in linear elastic solid mechanics, plasticity and failure, introduce relevant analysis methods for material behaviour and demonstrate the application of these methods to the design of engineering components, building on the material introduced in MMME1052.Learning Outcomes
Learning Outcomes: On successful completion of this module students will be able to:
LO1 -Understand fundamental concept of the mechanics of solid systems as they apply to Engineering systems. - AHEP4: 1
LO2 -Select and apply quantitative analysis to complex problems, drawing conclusions and making qualified recommendations. - AHEP4: 1, 2, 3, 13
LO3 -Conduct laboratory investigations of the relationship between load, stress and strain for a range of mechanical systems, with an appreciation of the impact of experimental uncertainty and produce a formal written communication of the findings. - AHEP4: 12, 17
