Summary
This is a continuation module about Mechanical Design Principles and Methods. The methodology available for
design is described and further machine elements are introduced and analysed. Practical experience of the design process is obtained through design assignments and a group design-and-make project.
Target Students
Second year students in mechanical engineering and any other students who fulfill the prerequisites. Available to JYA/Erasmus students
Classes
- One 3-hour workshop each week for 6 weeks
- One 2-hour practicum each week for 22 weeks
- One 2-hour lecture each week for 24 weeks
- One 2-hour computing each week for 15 weeks
Assessment
- 20% Coursework 1: Group Design (make) project focusing on design of a functional machine system. The report requires a short introduction (half A4), executive summary (one A4 page) and a full report for which detailed guidelines are provided.
- Coursework 2: 2 x SolidWorks drawing assignments; 1 x SolidWorks assignment on design in context . 3 hour session for each assignment during which students complete the assignment by following a demonstration video.
- 30% Coursework 3: Individual design project. Designing a machine system for real engineering applications. The report requires a short introduction (half A4), executive summary (one A4 page) and a full report for which detailed guidelines are provided.
- 10% Practical: (Design) make project with testing. Students attend Engineering Application workshops to make designed parts & assemble. Completed system is tested & assessed based on quality of manufacturing, level of test performance & workshop/test attendance.
- 40% Exam 1 (1-hour-30-minute): 1 hour and 30 mins
Assessed by end of spring semester
Educational Aims
To introduce design methodology through the entire design cycle from establishing users' needs, generating creative concepts to developing fabricable engineered solutions. To develop knowledge of machine elements and mechanical systems. To develop enhanced skills in using CAD tools, communicating effectively in a team environment andoperating machine tools for manufacturing and testing of design.Learning Outcomes
