Summary
This year long foundational module is a direct continuation of first year aerospace design, incorporating new information and methods as well as enabling practice of previously learned concepts. The module includes the following topics:
- Sustainability issues in design
- Design for manufacture considerations and cost
- Machine elements function and correct selection
- CNC processes
- Group design project with manufacture of the finished design
- Individual design and analysis project
- Machine shop practical training
Re-assessment
Students who fail this module overall and are required to complete a re-assessment will be re-assessed by exam and/or coursework depending upon which elements are failed. The re-assessment exam and/or coursework mark alone will be used to determine whether students satisfy progression requirements.
Target Students
Students must be on one of the Aerospace Engineering Courses H402, H40A, H400, H40B.
Assessment
- 15% Coursework 1a: CW1a (15%) - LO1, LO2, LO3
- 10% Coursework 1b: CW1b (10%) - LO1, LO2, LO3
- 35% Coursework 2: CW2 (35%) - LO1, LO4
- Self Study 1: LO3. Pass/Fail. Mandatory Pass
- Self Study 2: LO3. Pass/Fail. Mandatory Pass
- Self Study 3: LO3. Pass/Fail. Mandatory Pass
- Self Study 4: LO3. Pass/Fail. Mandatory Pass
- Self Study 5: LO3. Pass/Fail. Mandatory Pass
- 40% Exam 1 (2-hour): EX1 (40%) - LO2, LO4, LO5, LO6
Assessed by end of spring semester
Educational Aims
Students should understand a wide variety of external factors influencing their design decisions such as sustainability, cost, manufacturing process etc. Students will acquire design know-how by doing and by demonstration. Students will cement skills learnt in first year and widen their understanding of CAE to include manufacturing processes and analysis.Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module students will be able to:
LO1 - Working effectively as a team to develop a design solution using a Computer Aided Engineering environment for integrated and concurrent design practice. (AHEP 16)
LO2 - Apply fundamental understanding of material removal processes and their limitations in order to select an appropriate approach for manufactured designs. (AHEP 13)
LO3 - Operate a computer aided engineering package to develop and optimise designs while communicating design intent. (AHEP 5)
LO4 - Demonstrate an understanding of the influence of external factors such as sustainability and cost on design decisions. (AHEP 7)
LO5 - Demonstrate an understanding of basic mechanical elements and their function. (AHEP 1)
LO6 - Discuss the importance of modern aerospace manufacturing practices. (AHEP 14)
