Summary
This year-long module comprises a number of elements and these are:
- Engineering Maths
- Introduction to Systems Engineering
- Essential professional engineering elements:, report writing, information searching, data analysis
- Essential engineering study/career support elements: Using MS Excel, Word, Powerpoint
- Essential project skills: team working, project management, MS Project
These skills will be covered to a level appropriate to first year aerospace engineering students.
In addition the module includes a year-long integrating group project element that draws in technical elements from other content in the first year of the course. A normal output from the project is a model scale aircraft designed to meet the specification set.
Method of reassessment:
Students who have not achieved a mark of 40% or above in either the two maths assessments will be required to reassess in the August reassessment period; the paper will cover both prior maths assessments. A mark of 40% or above is required in this re-assessment to pass the module.
Students who fail this module overall and are required to complete a re-assessment will be re-assessed in all failed assessment components. These failed component re-assessments will be undertaken as follows:
- Where a student has failed the Systems Engineering coursework they will complete a coursework re-assessment (10%)
- Where a student has failed either of the two maths assessments they will be required to reassess via a single resit covering both prior assessments. (up to 55%);
- Where a student has failed any number of the project coursework components, they will complete a coursework re-assessment covering the failed learning outcomes (up to 35%);
The re-assessment mark for the module will be a combination of the marks from components passed first time and the components that have been re-assessed.
Target Students
Students must be on one of the undergraduate Aerospace Engineering courses in Mechanical, Materials and Manufacturing Engineering.

Educational Aims
This module aims to provide students with sufficient competence in a range of professional engineering elements and skills such that they can conduct the technical, research and project elements of the first year of the aerospace engineering course and present the outcomes appropriately.Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module students should be able to:
LO1 - Demonstrate an understanding of complex numbers, their use and manipulation. (AHEP4 - M1)
LO2 - Apply matrix algebra techniques to efficiently analyse and solve systems of equations and algebraic eigenvalue problems. (AHEP4 - M1)
LO3 - Use extended techniques of differential and integral calculus, typically used in solving engineering problems. (AHEP4 - M1)
LO4 - Demonstrate use of vector techniques typically applied to solve engineering problems. (AHEP4 - M1)
LO5 - Apply system engineering practice to elicit and analyse the design requirements for an aerospace system. (AHEP4 – M2, M6)
LO6 - Organise a team that empowers members, working ethically and effectively in order to plan and manage an engineering project (AHEP4 - M9, M11, M15, M16)
LO7 - Develop a design solution using the available literature and engineering principles for an aerospace system (AHEP4 – M2, C4)
LO8 - Demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively the merits of the design (AHEP4 – C17)
LO9 - Reflect on personal performance, identifying skills used and target areas for further development (AHEP4 – M18)
