Summary
This year-long module introduces students on the Aerospace Engineering courses to the basic concepts and practices of aircraft design and flight mechanics. It covers the following topics:
- Aircraft classification and configurations
- Aircraft design procedures
- Aircraft characteristics and performance
- Preliminary aerodynamics analysis
- Flight envelopes
- Steady flight conditions
- Static stability
Target Students
Students must be on one of the Aerospace Engineering courses H402, H40A, H400, H40B. Not available to any other students including exchange students.
Classes
There are 3 weeks in the year wholly devoted to module MMME1050 and during those weeks classes won't take place for MMME1032.
Assessment
- 10% Coursework 1: CW1 (10%) - LO3, LO4
- 5% Coursework 2a: CW2a (5%) - LO1, LO2
- 10% Coursework 2b: CW2b (10%) - LO1, LO2
- 15% Coursework 2c: CW2c (15%) - LO1, LO2
- 20% Coursework 2d: CW2d (20%) - LO1, LO2
- 40% Exam 1 (2-hour): EX1 (40%) - LO1
Assessed by end of spring semester
Educational Aims
The aim of this module is to introduce students to the fundamental concepts and principles of aircraft design and flight mechanics.Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module students should be able to:
LO1 - Comprehend and apply the fundamental concepts of aircraft design and flight performance to simplified engineering scenarios. (AHEP 1)
LO2 - Investigate the performance of an aircraft by constructing an appropriate analysis approach when presented with a simple aircraft configuration. (AHEP 2,7)
LO3 - Use appropriate computational tools to explore aircraft flight characteristics from experimental data. (AHEP 3)
LO4 - Record the salient details from an experimental investigation and conduct accurate and appropriate data analysis. (AHEP 12)
