Summary
This module introduces students to basic concepts and practice of design and manufacture. It includes the following topics:
- The process of design supported by practical design activities.
- Methods of developing and communicating design intent
- Fundamentals of machine elements
- Group design project with integrated individual elements
- Machine shop practical training.
Re-assessment
Students who fail this module overall and are required to complete a re-assessment will be re-assessed by a single coursework. The re-assessment coursework mark alone will be used to determine whether students satisfy progression requirements.
Target Students
Primarily for 1st year UG mechanical, manufacturing and product design engineering students in the Department of Mechanical, Materials and Manufacturing Engineering. Not available to any other students including exchange students
Assessment
- 60% Coursework 1: Group Project Report and Deliverable - 60%: LO2, LO3, LO5
- 10% Exam 1 (1-hour): ExamSys 1 - Machine Elements test - 10%: LO1
- 30% Exam 2 (2-hour): ExamSys 2 - CAD / Drawing Test - 30%: LO4
Assessed by end of spring semester
Educational Aims
Students should understand, by doing, that mechanical system design is an iterative process. Student should acquire skills in the physical creation of designs of mechanical systems.Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module students will be able to:
LO1 -Understand the function of a range of common machine elements and simple mechanical systems. - AHEP4: 13
LO2 -Manage and deliver an Engineering design project - AHEP4: 5, 17
LO3 -Understand and practice safe workshop skills. - AHEP4: 12
LO4 -Model and communicate elements of a design through use of a 3D CAD package - AHEP4: 4, 5
LO5 - Collaborate effectively as part of a diverse team and engage in reflective practices to continually improve your teamworking skills, while upholding principles of equity and inclusion - AHEP4: 11, 16
