Summary
The aim of the module is to promote an understanding of the way that the media has developed in modern day society and to examine the way it shapes our lives. We will look at the media and cultural industries (with an emphasis on television, film and advertising) from a variety of critical perspectives to analyse the relationship of mass media with social, economic and political forces and in particular questions of political economy and the impact of the media on cultural life.
Target Students
Students registered on the MA Media, Communication and Culture. It is also available as an elective module to Erasmus students in their 4th years and to students on other MA programmes covering related issues offered in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. There are limited places on this module.
Classes
- One 2-hour seminar each week for 11 weeks
Assessment
- 20% Coursework 1: Essay - 1000 words
- 80% Coursework 2: Essay - 5000 words
Educational Aims
The module provides knowledge and understanding of the way thet the media have developed in modern day society and the way it shapes our lives. Students consider the media and cultural industries from a variety of perspectives to analyse their relationship with social, economic and political forces and in particular their impact on cultural life.Learning Outcomes
