Summary
Target Students
:Students of the International Communications Studies with Performing Arts pathway. Available as subsidiary to all Year 3 students, including those of other schools. Available to JYA/Erasmus students
Classes
- One 2-hour workshop each week for 12 weeks
- One 1-hour seminar each week for 10 weeks
- One 2-hour lecture each week for 5 weeks
Lecture: 10 hrs (2 hrs/week over 5 weeks) Seminar/Workshop: 10 hrs (1 hrs/week over 10 weeks) Project: 2 hrs (4 sessions of ½ hour of 1:1 supervision)
Assessment
- 50% Creative Portfolio: The portfolio should show evidence of the agreed Creative Output. Depending on the focus area selected (FA1- Performance, FA2- Composition, Film Making, Translation and Creative Writing, FA3- Direction/Management), the portfolio should include:FA1- A video recording featuring in full the student participation in the agreed performance.FA2- A soft copy of the output (Translation, Creative Writing) or a video/audio recording or the output, plus a soft copy of scores, script and relevant accompanying materials (Composition, Film Making).FA3- A video recording of the output, plus a log detailing student participation in the event.The assessment criteria will measure originality, creativity, technical assessment and how informed the output is relation to the current artistic and cultural context.
- 50% Essay: (5000-7000) The essay should show critical analysis of their own participation in the project, and discuss the socio-cultural issues associated with the output.
Educational Aims
Essay: to conduct an extended study, on an independently chosen topic, which shows evidence of original research and critical thought. Objectives: Dissertation: a critical approach to their own creative work, and how it relates to the current movements of creation and though.Creative Output: a clear understanding of the requirements of a substantive and original project. Depending of the chosen topic, the objectives will include: FA1- Performance: to develop a capacity for acting, instrumental or vocal performance, towards a professional standard. FA2- Composition, Film Making, Translation and Creative Writing: to enable students to develop extensive creative originality and appreciation of the practical realities of contemporary practices. FA3- Direction/Management: to develop a capacity for group management, leadership, resource administration, towards a professional standard production.Learning Outcomes
Knowledge and Understanding
A2. Knowledge and robust critical understanding of the range of theories, approaches, concepts and principles that constitute the subject area of International Communications Studies and an appreciation of the development and trajectories of the subject area as an academic field of enquiry.
A3. The ability to evaluate and discriminate between particular theories and approaches regarding their suitability to concrete situations, events, texts and practices.
A4. An appreciation of the ethical and political dimensions of the range of theories, approaches, concepts and principles that constitute the subject area of International Communications Studies especially concerning questions of cultural difference.
A5. A sense of the ambiguities, uncertainties and limits of methodologies in terms of how this impacts on the production of knowledge.
A7. An appreciation of the different cultural, artistic, historic an aesthetic dimensions of the different cultural expressions associated to Performing Arts, and their position as global phenomena.
A8. An understanding of the dynamics of the Performing Arts Industries.
