Summary
The module will examine the range of social, political and philosophical questions raised by mass immigration to France in the post-war period. These questions will be tackled through historical analysis of patterns of migration and changing immigration policies, as well as through the study of relevant films, novels and theoretical texts which engage with questions of citizenship, identity and ethnicity.

Educational Aims
To provide and overview of different traditions in French nationalism and different conceptions of national identity, citizenship and ethnicity, as these developed in France from the 19th century particularly.To equip students with an understanding of the ways in which mass immigration to post-war France has challenged the notions of French national identity contained in political traditions ranging from the extreme right to the republican left.to examine some of the ways the experience and aftermath of mass immigration has been represented in film and novel.Learning Outcomes
