Summary
Following your time spent living in a French-speaking country this advanced module will be your final step towards fluency. We'll help you continue to improve your oral and written skills using a wide variety of texts.
Your grammar expertise and vocabulary shall be deepened through the production of linguistic commentary and summaries. In addition, we'll help you develop translation skills. Your French writing skills will improve immeasurably as we translate into and out of French creative writing in different registers.
Target Students
Core language module for all UG students reading SH, JH and CH degrees with French; available to subsidiary and Liberal Arts students who have taken MLAC2082 or MLAC2145.

Classes
- One 2-hour seminar each week for 20 weeks
- One 1-hour seminar each week for 20 weeks
The School of Cultures, Languages and Area Studies operates an attendance policy. The details of this policy can be found in the student handbook on Workspace and in module handbooks. One 1-hour workshop weekly; one 1-hour oral class weekly per student. NB Practical refers to oral class sessions.
Assessment
- 15% Coursework 1: Writing task into L2, 650-700 words in the Autumn semester
- 10% Oral: In class continuous assessment
- 15% Coursework 2: Writing task into L1, 280 words in the Spring semester
- 10% Listening Exam: 1 hour on-table test in January
- 20% Oral Exam: 20 minutes - end of Spring semester
- 30% Exam 1 (2-hour): 2 hour written exam in the Spring exam period

Educational Aims
This module aims to take you to a level commensurate with C1/C2 of the Common European Framework of Reference. As such, you will be able to express, in written and spoken French, attitudes, feelings, opinions and arguments with a near-native degree of fluency, grammatical accuracy, complexity and lexical variation. In terms of comprehension, you will be able to understand both the explicit and implied meaning of written, audio and audio-visual texts, of varying lengths, produced for native French-speakers, on a wide range of subjects. In addition to obtaining advanced levels of competence in French comprehension and expression, you will develop to a high-level your ability to translate texts into and out of English.Learning Outcomes
