Summary

Further extends the four skills of speaking, reading, listening and writing to enable students to gather and process information accurately and quickly through discussion, from radio and TV, and from written sources. Teaching methods involve intensive classes and the use of language laboratory materials. In addition students are required to complete various learning tasks via Moodle.

Target Students

Post-intermediate/early advanced level in the target language. Native speakers or graduates of their mother/father tongue language secondary schools are not advised to take. This module is open to all students provided their home department approves, but because 20-credit and 10-credit are combined in this module and both groups of students will be taught the same in this module, priority of seats will be given to students doing the module as a compulsory element of their degree. Thus, there is only a limited number of places for 10-credit students on this module. Students are reminded that enrolments which are not agreed by the Offering School in advance may be cancelled without notice.

Educational Aims

The overall aim of the module is to consolidate and extend students' competence in the four skills of speaking, reading, listening and writing in the target language. Special emphasis will be put on developing more sophisticated oral and written skills, enabling students to deal proficiently and accurately with real-life situations (such as information-retrieval from written and spoken sources and report writing in the target language). Additional skills taught this semester include letter- and CV writing.

Learning Outcomes

a) Knowledge and understanding:

 

Students will extend their familiarity with the target language structure at Advanced level. They will further develop the following skills: speaking, reading, listening and writing in the target language with confidence, fluency, accuracy and sophistication. 

 

b) Intellectual skills:

 

On completing the module, students should be able to manipulate the language using the further skills they have acquired in speaking, reading, listening and writing in the target language, together with grammatical structures at the Advanced level. 

 

c) Professional/practical skills:

 

Students will acquire further skills necessary to cover topics both orally and in written form in the target language at a sophisticated level, and to use the telephone for information retrieval. 

 

d) Transferable skills:

 

Use of IT resources; use of dictionaries; pair and group work; independent work; presentation and interaction; essay writing; construction of coherent argument; summary writing; time-management; cultural and inter-cultural awareness.
