Summary
Students undertaking this module will have the opportunity to study practical and theoretical approaches to writing for television, radio, and print publications. This module will teach you specialist practical skills in journalism as well as developing your creative abilities in media forms of writing. The module will introduce you to the structure of newsrooms and the process of news production and will offer you the opportunity to visit an active TV or newspaper newsroom.
Target Students
Compulsory module for third year International Communication Studies students. Available to JYA/Erasmus students.
Classes
- One 2-hour seminar each week for 10 weeks
- One 1-hour lecture each week for 10 weeks
Activities may take place every teaching week of the Semester or only in specified weeks. It is usually specified above if an activity only takes place in some weeks of a Semester
Assessment
- 40% Presentation: Individual Portfolio and 2,500 word essay
- 60% Coursework: 2,500 word essay
Educational Aims
This module aims to develop skills to write for the media, to equip students with the necessary knowledge of writing with clarity and coherence and with responsibility. It aims also at developing students’ skills and methods in researching and gathering information.Learning Outcomes
The module will be taught through a combination of interactive lectures and workshops. By the end of the module will be able to put together a news report, researching and writing a feature article. You will explore the differences and similarities between writing for a newspaper and writing for a radio or TV news program. This module will help you understand the legal and ethical framework in which journalists must operate.
