Summary

This module provides an introduction to the skills of interpreting aiming at help the student understand and critically analyze the key settings or domains of language interpreting.  English is used as the source language and the student has the possibility to choose his/her target language subject to availability of staff/students. The type of fields covered includes healthcare, legal, educational, social care and faith-related interpreting.

Target Students

This module is available to all University of Nottingham undergraduate students in years 2 and 3. Ideally, students should have a minimum background knowledge on linguistics or at least be aware of how languages work. It provides an opportunity for students to acquire a first approach to public services and liaison interpreting and the profession of an interpreter.

Classes

Students who wish to participate in this module may not miss more than five classes in the semester and are expected to complete all coursework assigned during the semester.

Educational Aims

To help students acquire language interpreting skills appropriate to the context of community interpreting.To review and identify examples of good interpreting practice, and to encourage students to demonstrate extended competence in both languages.To encourage students to reach their own decisions about dilemmas and challenges encountered while interpreting a foreign language.To explore the main linguistic and cultural issues associated with the profession of liaison interpreter.
