Summary
This is a level 2, one-semester module aimed at students in modern languages who may or may not have prior knowledge of the French experience of the 1914-1918 conflict. It will introduce students, via the study of primary historical sources, to the evolving ways in which French and Francophone men and women have represented and remembered the experiences of the First World War.
Teaching is based on the lecture/tutorial format outlined below.
Target Students
Available to SH and JH UG students taking French as part of their plan. Not available to students taking MLAC2145. Available to Liberal Arts and subsidiary students who have taken MLAC1150.

Classes
- One 1-hour workshop each week for 11 weeks
- One 1-hour lecture each week for 11 weeks
Assessment
- 20% Presentation: A group presentation (10 minutes) which responds to an essay-type question.
- 80% Assignment: An in-class commentary on a seen primary source similar to those that we will analyse in the workshops.

Educational Aims
On completion of this module, students should:(i) demonstrate knowledge and understanding about the social and cultural history of the First World War in France(ii) be able to engage critically with primary and secondary sources(iii) demonstrate an ability to carry out individual research in preparing essays and presentations(iv) demonstrate increased confidence and ability in the handling of complex written French texts.Learning Outcomes
