Summary

This module builds on the language acquired in 2A by further development of speaking, writing and comprehension skills to enable communication in more complex situations. Grammatical structures of the language are practised with authentic materials. In addition, students are required to undertake a programme of autonomous learning.

Target Students

Second year students who are doing this module as a compulsory element of their degree. 20-credit and 10-credit are combined in this module and both groups of students will be taught the same in this module. Priority of seats will be given to students doing the module as a compulsory element of their degree, thus there is a limited number of places for 10-credit students on this module.

Educational Aims

The overall aim of the module is to develop further competence in the language by improving the four skills of speaking, reading, listening and writing. Students will continue to develop their awareness of autonomy in language learning under the guidance of their language tutor. Teaching is communicative with regular opportunities for pair- and group- work. There is emphasis on extracting and processing authentic language through the study of major topic areas. Emphasis continues to be placed on oral and aural skills, making full use of multi-modal resources available.
