Summary
This module offers an introduction to the field of Cultural Studies from an ethnomusicological and popular music studies perspective. Students will study a range of musical cultures beyond the traditional canon of Western art music. The module examines different meanings, practices, and theories of musics from a diverse range of cultures, surveying traditions from Asia, the Americas, Africa, the Middle East, Europe, and the Pacific. It incorporates an introduction to ethnomusicological theory and method and an overview of key studies in Anglophone and Asian popular musics.
Target Students
Open for Performing Arts students. Also open for International Communications Studies students, space permitting. Students from other schools should approach the convenor before registering for the module.
Classes
- One 2-hour seminar each week for 10 weeks
- One 1-hour lecture each week for 10 weeks
Assessment
- 40% Coursework: 1 x 2000 word essay and inclass presentation
- 60% Exam (1-hour-30-minute): 1 x 1.5 hour exam
Educational Aims
Education Aims: The module aims to introduce students to a wide range of contexts and styles of music from around the world; to facilitate the development of critical skills for the analysis of diverse musical practices; and to give students an introductory grounding in the terms, concepts, and principal debates in the fields of ethnomusicology and popular music studies.Learning Outcomes
Learning Outcomes: Awareness of cultural differences and of ethnomusicological approaches to the study of other cultures; development of critical perspectives on the meanings of musics in different cultures; introduction to a diverse range of music cultures; ability to situate one’s own musical experience(s) in global contexts; awareness of debates surrounding the term ‘World Music’; development of a critical understanding of the key issues in Anglophone and Asian popular musics.
