Summary
The basic structure of the language will be extended and reinforced through topics related to everyday life. All four skills of speaking, reading, writing and listening are covered. The grammatical structures acquired in 1A will be consolidated and developed further. Students are also required to undertake a programme a programme of autonomous learning.
Target Students
This module is open to all students provided their home department approves. There is a limited number of places on this module. Students are reminded that enrolments which are not agreed by the Offering School in advance may be cancelled without notice. Available to JYA/Erasmus students. This Module has been identified as being particularly suitable for first year students, including those from other Schools.

Classes
- One 3-hour lecture each week for 12 weeks
Assessment
- 30% In Class Test: In class coursework – Once a semester: Listening (30 mins)
- 30% Speaking Task: Group Speaking Task (Q&A)
- 40% Written Exam: Essay Writing (SPR semester) (1 hour)
Educational Aims
Students will learn and practice the four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing together with basic grammatical structures. This will enable them to manipulate the language and participate effectively in everyday social situations. Full use will be made of communicative methods. Students will further develop autonomy in language learning under the guidance of their language tutor.Learning Outcomes
