Summary
This course considers:
- Advancement and consolidation of midwifery skills in practice;
- The midwife’s professional role including autonomy and accountability
- Continuity of care and carer- caseholding in year three and care pathways;
- Appreciation of midwifery practice within local, national and international settings;
- The delivery and evaluation of parent education;
- Competency in the initiation and support of breast feeding women;
- Competency in universal care in a range of diverse antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal care settings taking into account physical, emotional, social, spiritual and cultural factors;
- Competency in pharmacology, medicines management and administration;
- Perineal trauma and repair

- Assessment: Assessment of practice learning via Midwifery Ongoing Record of Achievement (MORA) E-practice document (pass/fail)
- 100% In Class Exam: Newborn Life Support OSCE to assess knowledge, understanding and skills.

Educational Aims
To consolidate the skills in the care of the childbearing women, the baby and the family unit and recognise the role of the midwife in the care of women with normal childbirth experiences and those with additional and complex physical, psychological and social needs.Learning Outcomes
Knowledge and Understanding
Critically analyse the universal, additional and complex care of the childbearing woman, the neonate and family demonstrating professional behaviour and conduct in line with The NMC Code and NHS Values
Intellectual Skills
Demonstrate advanced knowledge and understanding of midwifery care across the continuum for all childbearing families through critical reflection.
Professional/Practical Skills
Demonstrate proficiency in the provision of universal and additional care alongside midwives and other health and social care practitioners, under indirect supervision.
Demonstrate the principles of safe and effective administration of prescription and non-prescription medicines including midwives’ exemptions, and the ability to progress to a prescribing qualification following registration
Critically analyse appropriate evidence to underpin midwifery universal and additional care, relating knowledge of anatomy and physiology.
Transferable Skills
Utilise proficient communication and interpersonal skills to demonstrate leadership, positive role modelling and collegiate working to assist with professional development and quality improvement
