Summary
This course considers:
a) midwifery clinical knowledge and skills in universal care for women and the newborn and anticipating, preventing, and responding to complications and additional care needs;
b) continuity of care and carer- case-holding and the role of the midwife;
c) the midwife’s professional role including autonomy and accountability;
d) pharmacology, medicines management and administration of medicines;
e) the effectiveness of risk assessment tools;
f) determining fetal well-being using fetal monitoring;
g) the initiation and support of breast feeding – managing challenges;
h) antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal care in women and babies with additional needs;
i) managing obstetric emergencies;
j) assessing causes and management of perineal trauma;
k) interprofessional learning;
l) reflection in and on clinical practice;
m) systematic examination to include heart, hips and eyes.

200 hours of learning delivered by a variety of methods, including self-directed study
Assessment
- 100% Inclass Exam Practical: In-class Practical Exam- multiple OSCEs to assess knowledge, understanding and skills (100%).
- In Class Exam Practical: Evidence of witnessed NIPE examinations under direct supervision (pass/fail)
- Assessment E-Practice Document: Assessment of practice learning via Midwifery Ongoing Record of Achievement (MORA) E-practice document (pass/fail)

Educational Aims
To develop student’s knowledge and skills in universal midwifery practice and the care of the childbearing women, the baby and the family unit with additional health and/or social needs.Learning Outcomes

2. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of universal care and recognise when additional midwifery care for childbearing families with complex needs is required through critical reflection and clinical reasoning.

3. Safely contribute in the provision of universal and additional care alongside midwives and other health and social care practitioners, under indirect supervision.
4. Demonstrate professional behaviour and conduct in line with The NMC Code and NHS Values.
5. Apply appropriate evidence to underpin midwifery universal and additional care, relating knowledge of anatomy and physiology.
